I wanted to show you some of the things I’ve recently made. I showed these in November, and am sort of shelving the thematic imagery for now. I still love Libyan rebels and hearts, but it’s beneficial for both of us to give each other space.

Somehow I missed all the usual holidays so decided to make Valentines instead. Plus, I had such a great time printing Valentines last year for the card show that I figured I’d give it another go.  Without meandering into the usual disaffected musings on whether love exists (which is s000 2k8) and a critique of the boring commodification of such things by corporations, Valentine’s Day is great! Why not celebrate “love,” in its many iterations? I believe in having multiple valentines, so I’ve made a few for all the illicit romances you’ll have to appease to this February.

The moment I realized I could design my own sendables was one of the first real WHOA moments I had as a creative; I’ve been making cards for about ten years now. I’ve been consuming print media with rabid abandon since I was old enough to spend my own money, and spent a lot more time with my Rolling Stones in high school than I did doing anything actually cool. Cards seemed like the most natural outlet for my love affair with shredding magazines because I wanted to share what I was making with my friends. Plus, writing letters is a lost art that I’ve always been enamored with. Who doesn’t love receiving a missive, especially handmade? Sitting around with a stack of magazines, scissors, a glue stick and Kids In The Hall is my church or yoga.  I’ve been so busy with shows recently that I haven’t had time, but I cleared Thanksgiving day for collaging. Here’s some of what I made.

The opening of my first solo show EVS was last weekend and OMCHRIST it was fun. There were hundreds of people mulling about the Park Trades Center in Kalamazoo MI, most of whom walked around the Exquisite Corpse gallery saying “hmmm…. interesting…” and not getting it but also some who did and therefore are my brothers and sisters 4 lyfe. My real brother and sister were there too– Elsa was the DJ and really kicked out the jams to match the pink wall (as well as helped me with issues practical and spiritual in preparation for the show) and Ethan helped hawk some coozies. Twas truly magical and I really couldn’t have done it without Nikki Exquisite, a fabulous artist as well doer of all kinds of important things, Bo, who is excellent at climbing ladders and offering input, and Megan, who is the best unpaid intern I could ask for because she retrieves good coffee and quinoa snacks. Without them, I would never have the chance to one day become big enough to throw a tantrum, fire them, and then beg for their forgiveness. One can dream.

I decided to paint the front wall pink because the color itself acts as a sign which prompts the viewer to confront commonly held notions about gender and cultural constructs in general in our society. Plus, it looks cute.

I’m about to get religious because Friday October 22 was autumnal nirvana for these northern climes and Nikki and my long-awaited street art show FOOD TRUCK ART TRUCK was a wild success. There were saxophones. There were quesadillas. There were babies. There were coozies. The mayor came! And it ended like an episode of Strangers With Candy– with a lesson and dance party. The lesson: SOMEbody has to make it happen, so it might as well be [you]. The dance party: zany, per usu.
